Jul 22 - 2025
Greece has once again affirmed its position as one of the world’s leading travel destinations, with the tourism sector breaking new records. In alignment with a global rebound in international travel, the country not only met but exceeded expectations in 2024, showcasing its enduring appeal and economic resilience. Similarly, forecasted tourism figures for 2025 are highly optimistic, while Greece has been named the Best European Destination at the 2025 Telegraph Travel Awards.
Greece Leading the Way
According to the World Tourism Organization, international tourism nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2024, reaching 99% of 2019 figures. Around 1.4 billion tourists traveled last year, 11% more than in 2023. While global tourism continued its recovery, Greece stood out with arrivals surpassing 2019 levels -a record year in tourism- by 6%, outperforming most European and global destinations and emerging as one of the strongest post-pandemic performers, attracting millions of visitors from across the globe.
Record-Breaking Tourism Figures for Greece
From the Aegean islands to the vibrant streets of Athens, Greece welcomed 35.9 million tourists in 2024, marking a 9.8% increase over the previous year. Even more impressive was the financial contribution of this influx—tourism revenue reached €21.7 billion, which is up 5.4% from 2023, according to the Bank of Greece. This marks the third consecutive year of record-breaking growth for the country’s tourism sector.
Tourism’s Vital Role in the Greek Economy
Tourism continues to be a cornerstone of the Greek economy, contributing approximately 20% to national GDP and supporting one in five jobs across the country. According to the recent annual report by the Greek Tourism Confederation’s think-tank, INSETE, the sector directly contributed €30.2 billion to GDP in 2024, with total economic impact—including indirect benefits—estimated between €66.5 billion and €80.1 billion.
This exceptional performance has not only helped Greece exceed economic growth targets but has also attracted significant foreign investment in infrastructure, hospitality, and real estate development—particularly in luxury accommodations and high-end tourism services.
